Chapter 9: The Mirror

I texted Imogen back from the elevator: Tomorrow at ten. I'll send an address.

Then Auden took the phone out of my hand and set it face down on the marble entry table.

"Tonight is mine," he said.

His penthouse took the top two floors of a tower in Buckhead.

I saw dark wood, bare stone and a wall of windows.

Then I saw nothing, because he had my wrists in one hand and my mouth under his.

He walked me backward through a hallway, through a door, into a bedroom as big as my first apartment.

One whole wall was a dressing room of mirrors, floor to ceiling, lit from above in a soft gold.

He stopped me in front of it.

I saw us.

Him tall behind me, dark and broad in his shirtsleeves.

Me small in front of him, my hair half down, my sweater rucked up where his hands had been.

"Look," he said.

"I'm looking."

"What do you see?"

"A woman who needs to be undressed."

He smiled at my reflection.

He lifted my sweater over my head.

He unhooked my bra and let the straps slide down my arms.

He cupped my breasts in both hands and thumbed the nipples while I watched in the glass.

"What else?"

"A man who's very sure of himself."

"I'm sure of one thing."

He unbuttoned my skirt and let it drop.

He hooked his thumbs in my underwear and slid it down my thighs.
