Chapter 22: Daylight
Damon's POV
I had a ring, no plan, and until seven the next morning no idea where to ask.
She had kept one last night shift on the second floor for herself.
The new night staff did not start until the following week.
I did not sleep.
At six-forty I stood in the courtyard of Larch Hollow with my hands in my pockets and the box in the right one.
It was a bare square of brick, with four benches and a dead fountain.
For three years I had watched it from my window and never once been let out into it after dark.
The sun came up over the east wing and laid a long strip of light across the pavers.
Maura came out at seven in her blue scrubs, with her coat over her arm and her braid half undone.
She saw me and stopped.
"You're up early."
"I wanted to ask you something."
"In the courtyard?"
"In daylight," I said. "I've only ever asked you things at night."
She walked over and stood in front of me, tired and wary and a little amused.
"Go on."
"You said not while I was your patient."
"I did."
"I asked you twice, and you said it twice, and you were right both times."
"I was not right about the second one."
"You were right about the second one too. You were right to make me walk out of that door first." I took the box out of my pocket. "I'm out of the building now. It's morning. It's sunlight. I can stand here and ask."
I opened the lid.
She looked at the ring, and she looked at me.
"I said dark green," she said.
"I heard."
"In bed."
"I hear everything in bed."
She laughed, short, with her eyes wet.
"Maura Garvey," I said. "Will you marry me?"
She did not answer at once.
She took the ring out of the box with two fingers and turned it in the sun.
