Chapter 18: Boards
Clara's POV
On the morning of the board exam I woke at four and checked my phone before my eyes were open.
There was nothing from Hayes.
I told myself that was what I wanted.
The review office had dismissed the complaint on Monday.
The panel had read the call log, played the voicemail, and taken a signed statement from the circulating nurse.
Hayes's files had arrived in my inbox at ten that night, with a subject line that said only Call log and voicemail.
The message under it said, Nothing else.
I had read that four times.
I dressed in the dark and drove to the testing center on the north side with a thermos of coffee and my father's old watch in my pocket.
He had given it to me when I left Marietta for medical school.
It had never kept good time, and he had never fixed it, because he said that one was mine.
The lot was nearly empty at six.
I parked, and I sat there with the engine running.
I knew what I was waiting for.
In three years of marriage, Hayes had made grand gestures about once a quarter.
He sent flowers to the ER on my birthday, a thing I never wanted, with a card his assistant had written.
He once drove to the hospital at dawn and parked in my spot and stood on the curb with a coffee until I had to go over and take it, in front of everyone.
