Chapter 22: The Moon Cake
Caleb's POV
"Yes," Willa said.
She said it to the porch light, and then she said it to me.
"Yes. I want one. I'm scared to death, and I want one, and I want you in the room."
I couldn't say anything.
She took the mug out of my hands, set it down, and kissed me until the tea went cold.
The surgery was on a Tuesday in January, in a clean white clinic in Columbus.
There was a waiting room with a fish tank, a stack of old magazines and a bad painting of a sailboat.
I sat in a vinyl chair holding a gown and a clipboard.
I had been in a chair five years before, and the man in the next seat had flipped through a golf magazine and told the nurse I was the bravest man in Ohio.
This time the chair next to mine held Willa.
She had brought a thermos of coffee and a library book.
She did not look at the book once.
"If I get nervous, I'm going to start telling you the plot of this," she said.
"What is it?"
"A romance. Very long. A woman waits eleven chapters to get her man to say something."
"Tell me the end."
"They end up on a ferry."
"Everyone ends up on a ferry in your house."
She laughed and put her hand on my knee, in front of the fish.
The nurse came to the door with a clipboard.
"Mr. Penrose?"
I stood, and Willa stood with me.
She straightened my collar as though I were six.
"Brave man," she said. "Ohio's best."
I walked down the hall with my face burning, and I have never been so happy to be embarrassed.
