Chapter 4: Eyes Up

I didn't sleep.

By seven in the morning I had decided two things.

I wasn't going to let Brooke decide how this ended, and I wasn't going to tell Clark anything until I knew how.

Neither plan lasted past the quad.

Brooke got there before me, wearing a white sweater that made her look innocent, standing in front of the bookstore with red eyes.

Clark was in line for coffee.

Forty people were within earshot, and Brooke knew it.

"I never cheated on you," she said, loud and wobbly, with one hand on her heart. "Rhett's my cousin. I was scared. I thought you'd stopped caring, and I panicked."

The girls in line turned to watch.

Clark took his coffee from the barista and said thank you to her, calmly, before he faced Brooke.

"Rhett isn't your cousin," he said.

"He is. We were just..."

"You were on his lap," Clark said. "Last night, ten forty."

I stopped walking.

He hadn't told me that part.

Brooke's face did something complicated.

Then she did what she did best, and her eyes filled.

"Please," she said. "Please, Clark, I need you. I need to talk to you alone."

"Brooke."

"I miss you every night."

I thought of her asleep in the next room at one in the morning, with her phone in my hand.

That was the moment I stopped thinking.

I crossed the quad, took Clark's coffee out of his hand, and put it on the bench.

"Babe," I said. "You're late for breakfast."

I took his face in both hands and kissed him.

It was supposed to be a show.

I had planned it as a show, with a count of three, and a smile at the end.
