Chapter 8: Peeping Clark

I woke up with Clark's arm across my waist and the sun on the floor.

For a few waking moments I was the happiest person in Ohio.

Then I remembered Brooke's text, and I lay there looking at the ceiling.

I had planned to tell him.

I had planned it all the way up the stairs and again in the dark.

But he turned over in his sleep and said my name, and I couldn't.

"Hey," he mumbled, with his eyes closed. "Why are you thinking so loud?"

"I'm not."

"You're thinking at me."

He opened one gray eye and kissed my bare shoulder.

"Good morning, Cecelia."

"Good morning."

He pulled me in against his chest, and for one second I let him.

Then my phone started buzzing on the nightstand, and kept buzzing.

I grabbed it.

There were eighty-one notifications.

The first one was a video, posted at six fifty, from Brooke's account.

She was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, in her pajamas, with no makeup and swollen eyes.

"I'm sorry to do this," Brooke said to the camera, and her voice shook on cue. "But I'm scared. My ex, Clark Ellery, has been watching me. For six months."

I sat up.

"He knows things he can't know," she said. "He told me what I was wearing in a locked bathroom. He says things about my room when he's never been in it. Last night he told a whole line of people what was on my phone, inside my bag."

Clark had gone absolutely still behind me.

"I don't know how he does it," Brooke said, and a tear rolled down her cheek. "I think he watches girls through walls. Please be careful."

The video ended.

Under it, the comments were already coming in so fast they scrolled.
