Chapter 21: The Ledge

Mason's POV

I read the post once and was already moving.

"Stay with Roz," I told Willa. "Don't answer the phone. Don't drive anywhere."

"Mason."

"If she wants a scene, I'm not letting her have the cast."

I dialed 911 from the car, with the phone on the dash.

"A woman may be in danger," I told the operator. "Camille Draper, Draper Pictures, the roof. She posted a note. I'm on my way. Send a crisis team, not only patrol."

The operator took the address and told me not to go in alone.

I said I understood.

I went in alone.

Draper Pictures kept its night guard behind a desk in the lobby, a heavy man who had waved at me through two years of shoots.

He was standing up when I came through the doors.

"Mr. Kerr, Ms. Draper came in twenty minutes ago. She used her pass. I tried to call her father."

"Where is she?"

"I didn't stop her. She looked fine."

"Which floor?"

"The roof's locked. Tenth floor, then the service stairs. She has the key." He looked sick. "I should have gone with her."

"Wait here for the police," I said. "Send them up."

I took the stairs two at a time.

At the tenth floor the service door stood open, and the stairwell went on up into the dark.

I kept my breathing quiet.

At the top the door to the roof had been propped with a brick.

I pushed it, and the night wind came in.

The roof was flat and gray, with ventilation housings and a water tank and a low parapet around the edge, no higher than my knee.

At the far side, past the tank, sat Camille.
