Chapter 5: Flowers and a Camera

On Tuesday morning a black SUV stopped outside Roz's bungalow and a photographer got out of it first.

I watched from the kitchen window with a mug in my hand.

A second man climbed out with a camera on a strap, and then Lance stepped onto the sidewalk with an armful of white roses.

He had put on the gray cashmere coat I bought him for his birthday.

He looked up at the house and smiled for the lens.

"Is that your husband?" Roz said from the stove.

"Yes."

"Is he going to be a problem?"

"He brought a photographer."

"Then yes." She turned off the burner and wiped her hands on her cardigan. "Let me handle this."

"No. He's mine to handle."

I put down the mug and opened the front door.

Lance came up the path fast, with the roses held out in front of him in both hands.

"Wills," he said, loud enough to carry. "Baby. I've been so worried."

The photographers moved up behind him, clicking.

"You didn't come home," Lance went on, with his eyes wet. "I called you forty times. I just want to bring my wife home and get her the rest she needs."

I did not take the flowers.

"I'm not unwell," I said.

"Sweetheart, you're upset. It's all right."

"I'm not upset. I'm awake."

"Wills."

"I'm not coming home, Lance."

His smile did not move.

He leaned in close and kissed my cheek for the cameras, and his mouth stayed by my ear.

"Don't do this in front of them," he said, very low. "You have no money, no job and no place to go. Nobody will believe a housewife who had a breakdown in a lobby. Come home and we'll fix this quietly."
