Chapter 7: The Next Line

The Writers Guild lunch had thirty round tables and a ballroom full of people who had read the news.

I walked in at noon with Mason beside me, in a navy dress Roz had pressed on her own ironing board.

Heads turned.

A man at the nearest table said something to his wife behind his menu.

"Keep going," Mason said under his breath. "Don't look at them."

"I'm not."

"You are. You're counting."

"Eleven," I said.

Camille spotted us from across the room and came toward us with both arms open.

She wore white again, with her hair down.

"Willa," she said. "You came. Oh, I'm so glad."

She hugged me, and her perfume was the same one she'd worn since we were teenagers.

I let her.

When she stepped back she kept my hands in hers and looked at me with shining eyes.

"I've felt sick about it," she said. "I wanted to call you. I just didn't want to make it worse. You'll sit with us."

"Where's Lance?"

"At the table. He's being sweet about it, I promise."

She tucked her arm through mine and walked me to the front.

Lance rose from his chair with his hand on the back of Camille's.

He did not meet my eyes.

There were seven of us at the table, counting Mason.

A Guild vice-president with a gray beard, a woman in a tweed jacket, a man from a studio who kept checking his watch, and Camille, Lance and me.

Mason took the chair on my left.

Lance looked at him, then at me, then at Mason's hand resting on the back of my chair.

"Mason," he said, with a lazy grin. "Didn't know you were friends with my wife."

"We've been discussing the script."

"Which script?"

"The one with your name on the poster."

Camille laughed brightly.

"Oh, I love this," she said to the table. "It's nice to have the family here. I did introduce these two, you know. I always say I gave Willa her husband."

The man from the studio checked his watch.
