Chapter 8: Power Cut

I read the statement standing in the coat room, with Lance's cologne in my nose.

It said that I had contributed notes and emotional support to Low Tide, that Camille Draper was its sole author, and that I was grateful.

At the bottom was a line for my signature and a line for the date.

"The house," Lance said again. "Your name on the deed. All you have to do is sign."

I tore the page in half.

Then in half again.

I put the pieces in his breast pocket and patted it flat.

"Keep your house," I said.

"Willa."

"Keep the money too. I have a better plan."

I took my coat from the girl at the counter and walked out past a ballroom full of people who had stopped pretending not to listen.

That night it rained.

Roz had cleared out her garage for me, with a cot, a lamp and a table, and told me I could stay as long as I paid in dinner.

Mason drove me back from the lunch in silence, with the wipers beating, and he came into the garage because I did not tell him not to.

I dried my hair with a towel and he stood by the door with water running off his collar.

"You didn't say a word in the car," I said.

"Neither did you."

"I was thinking."

"About what?"

"About a gate," I said.

He frowned.

"Eight months ago, I drove to the set with a thermos of soup," I said. "Lance had a cold. I wanted to bring him lunch."

Mason went still.

"A man at the gate said it was a closed set and Mrs. Holloway was not on the list. I said I was his wife. He said his instructions came from the director."

"Willa."
