Chapter 20: The Knife
My phone buzzed in my hand before the grandmother finished crying.
It was Katia's number.
I opened it, and a photograph filled the screen.
Katia sat on a wooden chair with her glasses gone and her red hair stuck to her wet face.
Her wrists were tied behind her with rope.
Behind her I could see broken slats, black water, and a rack of long oars.
Under the picture, one line of text.
Midnight. Bring the phone and every copy. Come alone, signorina. If the big dog comes, the red girl goes off the dock. Let's see if she films that.
I read it to Nero out loud, because I couldn't make myself do anything else.
His face did what it had done in the parking garage.
It emptied out.
"I'll kill him," he said.
"No."
"Mona."
"No. Listen to me." I took his face in my hands. "If you kill him, you're the man he said you were, and the Table sees it. And Katia is in that chair."
