Chapter 29: The Chair
Snow was landing on the old man's hat and staying there.
"Tell me," Elio said.
"Not on the courthouse steps." The capo with the cane looked at the reporters behind us. "Tonight. At the café. The whole table." He looked at me. "Bring the doctor. It concerns her too."
He walked back to his car through the snow.
Elio didn't say anything all afternoon.
He sat in my father's office at the clinic with Pope on his knee, staring at the stethoscope on the hook.
At seven, I put on my one good dress and my winter coat.
Tino drove us the four blocks because of the snow.
Caffe Massaro was dark out front, with the striped awning sagging under a white load.
The back room was full.
Twenty chairs.
Every man in his good suit.
Every wife along the wall.
Vittore's chair at the wrong end of the table was empty, and somebody had pushed it in hard against the cloth.
The capo with the cane stood at the head corner with a folded sheet of paper in his hand.
Elio's father's chair stood empty at the head of the table.
