Elio started to laugh under my hand.
"That's it?"
"That's it. No police at my wedding. No hotels. Not one."
"Your grandmother's going to want a cathedral."
"My grandmother can want."
My grandmother wanted a cathedral.
She started on the second of January, at breakfast, with a list on the back of a church envelope.
"Mass at our church," she said. "Then the Feast hall. Three hundred people."
"Nonna. Sixty."
"Two hundred and fifty."
"Eighty."
"Your father had four hundred at his funeral."
"Nonna, that's not a wedding argument."
"Everything is a wedding argument."
Elio sat between us eating his eggs.
He'd learned months ago not to take sides in that kitchen.
"What about the harbor patrolman?" Nonna said slyly. "You said no police."
"He's Dina's. He comes out of uniform, or he doesn't come."
"And the Don's people?"
"He's not a Don, Nonna."
"The not-Don's people."
Elio put his fork down.
"They come in their good suits," he said. "And they sit at the back, and they bring a gift for the clinic, not for us."
