The semifinal problem was about flood relief.
Eleven towns along a river, forty trucks, and a dam that would release water in stages over six hours.
The judges handed out the packets at nine.
At nine-oh-four, Peyton's team was already typing.
I watched Preston's hands on the keys.
They moved the way hands move when they are copying and not thinking.
"He's got it," Hannah whispered beside me. "The whole file. He's not even looking at the screen."
She was white to the lips, and she kept glancing toward the front row.
I put it down to nerves.
The physics junior and the chess sophomore had already split the towns between them.
I took the dam.
The dam was the whole problem, and the one thing Preston's file could not have told him.
I did it the way I count a wagon, by groups of the river and not by single houses.
Six hours later, we turned in a model that fit on four pages.
