Chapter 4: Wear the Green

I set my bag down with forced calm.

"Why are you in my friend's kitchen?" I asked.

"Because you weren't home," Camille said. "And I didn't know where else to go."

"How did you find this address?"

"Your boss's assistant follows me online." She pressed her fingers under her eyes. "I told her I was a friend of yours. I'm sorry. That was a lie. I'm here to tell you something, and I want you to hear it before you decide to hate me."

Shawna tapped the table with one finger.

"She's been here forty minutes," she said. "She cried on my dog. I'd say give her ninety seconds."

I sat down across from the woman who had slept in my guest bed.

Up close she was younger than the photo made her.

She had a chip in her nail polish and the tired look of someone who'd done a long day on her feet.

"I'm twenty-four," Camille said. "I don't date clients. I don't date anyone, really, because my agency says it looks bad. When Rhett asked me to dinner last month, I said no twice."

"Why did you say yes the third time?"

"Because he told me he'd been single for a year." She slid her phone across the table. "Read it."

It was a text thread.

Rhett's name sat at the top.

I read a message he had sent two weeks ago.

"I haven't touched anyone since I closed the last relationship. I'm careful. I don't do casual."

Below it, another one.

"Come to my place Sunday. I want to cook for you. Nobody there but me."

I felt the room go very quiet.

Shawna leaned over my shoulder and read it too.

"Nobody there but me," she said. "Nobody there but you and the photos of your girlfriend."

"There weren't any photos," Camille said.
