Chapter 20: Fraternization

I took the phone out of her hand.

I spread the picture with two fingers until it was just the two of them.

Bryce's hand on the back of Lauren's head. Her fingers in his good suit jacket.

Her class ring, on the hand at his collar.

Friday. 9:52 p.m.

"She walked off a ship this morning," I said.

The bride's mother looked at me.

"That's what he told me," I said. "At my first look. 'She walked off a ship this morning and came straight here without eating.'"

I could hear him saying it. The low, kind voice.

"She was here the night before," I said. "She was in the hotel. While I was making a toast."

The band was playing something slow. Three hundred people were dancing under the bulbs.

"Mrs. Pickard," the bride's mother said. "That's not the first time I've seen them."

I looked up.

"He keeps the corner room on nine," she said. "About once a month. For as long as I've been at the hotel, and that's two years in May."

"The same woman?"

"Every time." She took the phone back gently. "The first was Valentine's weekend. He ordered roses up to the room, and he checked in wearing his uniform."
