Chapter 26: Memorial Day
"Colonel," I said. "Is my mother still in the front row?"
There was a pause.
"Yes, ma'am. Major Lanier arranged the seating."
"Then so am I."
I hung up before he could answer.
Sawyer was standing right behind me on the loading dock.
"What do you need?" he said.
"Your truck at six," I said. "And Corey in a suit."
The parade deck was a long square of blacktop in front of battalion headquarters, already hot at nine in the morning.
They'd set out white folding chairs in rows, facing the wall.
A wreath of red, white and blue carnations stood on an easel beside a podium with the battalion seal on the front.
The wall was still under its blue tarp.
Behind the chairs, the battalion stood in formation on the grass. Hundreds of Marines in dress blues and white covers, not moving.
Off to one side, three TV cameras on tripods.
One of them was the station that had run my wedding clip.
A Marine with a clipboard walked us to the front row.
Mama went first, in her navy church dress, with her Gold Star pin on her collar.
