Chapter 8: The Major on the Road

I got out of the truck.

Sawyer said my name. I shut the door on it.

The gravel crunched under my boots.

Bryce's high beams lit up the shoulder, and every bug in Onslow County was dancing in them.

Bryce took a step back to give me room.

He was always good at giving me room. It was one of the things I'd liked.

"There she is," he said softly.

He held both hands out low and open, palms down.

It was how Daddy used to walk up on a spooked horse at my uncle's farm.

He'd go slow and talk the whole time, and never look it straight in the eye.

"You've had a hard week, Rosie. Harder than anybody should."

"Don't."

"I'm not angry. I want you to hear that. I was, Saturday. I'm not now." He tipped his head toward the truck. "Whatever this is, I understand it. You were scared, and he was there."

"He wasn't there. I went to him."

"Okay." He nodded, like I'd said something reasonable. "Okay. That's fair."

He came half a step closer.

"Here's what I want you to know. That contract can come back. The paper can go away. I know a lawyer who can make Saturday disappear in a week. Your mama doesn't have to lose the house."

"Is that a threat?"

"It's a door, sweetheart." His voice went lower and kinder. "I'm holding it open. That's all."

Behind me, I heard Sawyer's door open.
