Chapter 21: The Garage

"Jackie," Colby said. "You look tired."

He stood under the flickering light with the box held against his stomach.

A desk plant stuck out of it, a dead fern, and one of my old coffee mugs.

I stopped ten feet away.

"Move," I said. "I'm going home."

"I'll walk you out."

"No."

"I want to say one thing, and then I'll never bother you again."

The staff door banged behind me.

A group of coworkers had come down the stairwell, ten or twelve of them with their coats on, and they stopped in a loose half circle when they saw him.

One of them was the receptionist.

One was the man from HR.

Colby saw them and his shoulders rose, and I watched him decide to use them.

"Everyone's here," he said, brightly. "Good. I want you to hear this too."

"Colby."

"Jacqueline Brandvold took my life apart," he said to the garage. "I lost my job on Thursday. The fund let me go this morning. My lease is in her name, did you know that? I have nowhere to put this box."

"Your lease is in your name," I said. "You just never paid it."
