Chapter 4: The Camera Across the Street

The cuffs were cold, and the porch boards were the same ones I had stood on three years ago.

"Officer," Cassidy called from the doorway, with her voice shaking. "She forced her way in. I was alone."

"I rang the bell," I said. "She opened the door."

"Ma'am, you can explain at the station," the officer said.

"There's a camera on that door," said a man's voice behind me. "She's not lying."

The man from the hardware store had crossed the street.

He was tall, with rough hands and short brown hair going gray at the sides.

He had set the rope down somewhere, and now he stood at the bottom of the porch steps with his phone in his hand.

"Clyde Brennan," he told the officer. "I own the store across the street. My camera covers this whole front walk."

The officer looked at him and frowned.

"Mr. Brennan, this is a police matter."

"Then here's the matter." Clyde held up the phone. "Eleven-oh-four, she rings the bell. Eleven-oh-five, Ms. Cordell opens the door and waves her in. She went inside smiling."

"I was being polite," Cassidy said quickly. "I didn't know she'd go through my things."

"They're my things," I said. "That ring is my mother's."

"The ring is household property," Cassidy said.

"Does she have a receipt for it?" Clyde asked the officer.

Nobody answered.

The officer stood still for a long moment, and his eyes went from the phone to Cassidy and back.

Then he unlocked the cuffs.

"Ms. Cordell, if you want to press charges you'll go to the station and file a report," he said. "I can't arrest a woman who was invited into the house."
