Chapter 12: 4:19
On Friday morning Doc was back from Denver with his suitcase still in the hallway outside his office.
I had spent Thursday hiding from a video of my own mouth.
It had forty thousand views by lunch, and the caption read: Our trainer found a new team.
Mikkel had texted me one message that day.
The export is under the department's confidentiality notice. I will give it to Doc tomorrow and we will read it together.
I had answered: OK.
Now he stood against Doc's bookshelf with his hands behind his back, and he looked as though he had not slept.
Doc did not ask me to sit.
"I read an email last night in a Denver hotel," Doc said. "The athletic director's office copies the second signatory when someone opens a protected file."
He turned his monitor so I could see it.
Opened by: M. Dahl. Wednesday, November 19, 11:52 p.m.
"Wednesday," I said.
Nobody spoke.
"That's the night I stood in his lab," I said. "He closed the laptop, and he told me he would read it in the morning."
"I had not opened it then," Mikkel said. "I opened it after I walked you home. I had read it before you came back with the thermos."
"And at one o'clock you said there was something to show me."
"Yes."
"And I said tomorrow." My throat was tight. "So you waited."
"I waited until I could give it to Doc, with a sealed copy. The department can alter a server. I was afraid if you saw it, you would go to Tate and they would lose the original."
