Chapter 8: The Plaque
The Captain's Cup planning meeting was held Wednesday afternoon in the student union.
Fourteen people sat around a long table with name cards and a plate of cookies.
Reagan chaired it from the head, with a clipboard and a laminated schedule.
I walked in with my splinted hands and every head turned.
"Natalie," Reagan said warmly. "You came. Sit anywhere."
I took the chair at the foot, as far from her as the table allowed.
Tate sat on her right, and Rhett sat across from him, eating a cookie.
Heidi sat three seats down with her sleeves pulled over her hands.
She did not look at me.
The athletic director stood by the window with his arms behind his back.
"Before we start the agenda," he said, "I would like to say something to Ms. Cahill in front of her friends."
I waited.
"The department values your four years," he said. "On the thirteenth we will present you with the Student Trainer of the Year plaque. We will also send a warm letter to your graduate program. A misunderstanding should not follow a good student."
A few people clapped softly.
"A warm letter," I said.
"Saying the department stands behind your service."
"That's generous." I kept my voice level. "Is there a condition?"
He smiled. "Only the statement. It would simply close the file."
"The one that says I declined a seat."
"The one that says there was a misunderstanding about a seat."
"That's not the same sentence."
His smile stayed where it was.
