Chapter 5: Five Million
Percy's mother did not wait to be invited into the dining room.
She took the chair at the head of the table, and the lawyer she had brought took the chair beside her.
Imogen was still in the stained cream dress.
"Sit," the mother said. "This will be short."
Percy stood by the sideboard with his arms crossed.
The lawyer opened a leather folder and slid a single sheet across the polished wood.
It was a bank check.
Imogen read the amount twice.
Five million dollars, made out to her, signed in a firm black hand.
"It's yours tonight," Percy's mother said. "You sign the petition in front of my lawyer, and you take this, and you leave Larkin Street by morning."
"That's not what I agreed to."
"You didn't agree to anything my son wasn't tricked into."
"I'm sorry?"
The lawyer cleared his throat.
"The marriage license was filed at the county courthouse eight days after an alleged engagement. The only witnesses were your friend and Mr. Wexford's grandmother, who is fond of you. No family. No guests."
"Percy wanted it small," Imogen said.
"Percy," said the mother, "was carried out of a charity dinner that week so drunk the doctor wrote the number down."
Imogen looked at Percy.
He was watching the check, not her.
"That's what I was told," he said.
"By who?"
"By everyone."
"By your mother and by Camille," Imogen said. "You were not drunk. You were the most sober man in that courthouse. You cried when the clerk said husband."
