Chapter 6: The Cake

Imogen was gluing a torn page back into a Victorian atlas when Dylan Keelan walked into the library workroom with two coffees and no smile.

"You have three minutes," said Hattie Lund, without looking up from her screen.

Hattie had short copper hair and round glasses, and she had been Imogen's best friend for six years.

She also owned a shoebox containing ninety-nine letters from Percy's lawyers, and she had been waiting all week to throw it at someone.

"I know," Dylan said. "I know. I come in peace."

He put one coffee down in front of Imogen.

The other he held out to Hattie, who looked at it and did not take it.

Dylan set it on the desk and kept standing.

"I laughed," he said. "At the Ember Room. A guy filmed it, but I laughed, and I told everyone to come, and I..." He took a breath. "I wanted to say I'm sorry."

"That's one minute," Hattie said.

"I watched the clip of you kissing him at the lunch. I watched Percy's face afterward." Dylan rubbed the back of his neck. "I've known him since we were nine. I've never seen him look that lost."

"Lost how?" Imogen asked.

"He kept touching his mouth. He didn't know he was doing it."

She set down her glue brush.

"Who told you to come to the Ember Room that night, Dylan?"

He opened his mouth. He shut it.

"Camille."

"What did she say?"

"She texted on Wednesday." He pulled out his phone and found the thread. "'Percy's finally doing it Friday at nine. Bring the guys. Don't tell Imogen, she'll get dramatic.'"

Hattie leaned over and read it on his screen.
