Chapter 20: The Edge
Forty people screamed at once.
Chairs scraped back and a glass broke on the tar.
Delaney stood on the wrong side of the rail with her white dress whipping around her knees.
Below her feet was a narrow safety net strung along the roof's edge.
Below the net was fifty-two floors of nothing.
"Delaney!" Carson ran forward and stopped ten feet short. "Come back. Please. We'll fix this."
"You'll fix it?" she shrieked. "You proposed in front of your board so you'd look good!"
"Sweetheart."
"Don't call me that!"
I did not run.
I took out my phone, thumbed the camera on, and held it up.
My hands were steady, which surprised me.
"Delaney," I said. "Look at me."
Her head whipped around.
"Come back over the rail," I said. "Nobody is near you."
"You did this!"
"I'm thirty feet away."
"Say you pushed me!"
The crowd went quiet.
"Say it!" she screamed. "Say it, or I'll let go, and everyone will say it for you!"
