Chapter 24: Noon on the Roof
On Saturday at noon, my father climbed the last flight of stairs to the roof by himself.
He had insisted.
"The cardiologist said I could take stairs," he said, to anyone in the stairwell who would listen.
"He said one flight," said my mother.
"He said I could. I'm making it official."
I walked behind him with the picnic basket.
At the top he put his shoulder to the heavy steel door and pushed it open.
He did not stop to catch his breath, and he did not rub his arm.
He held the door for my mother with that arm.
"After you, June," he said.
"Such manners," she said, and went through.
The roof was full of sun.
Not a cloud was left over the river, and the whole city shone.
The helipad lay wide and black and warm in the middle of it, with the white lines painted clean.
