Dalton got up off the carpet slowly.
"How do you know?"
"The coffee ring. I put it there. The morning of my twelve-week scan."
I pulled out my own phone and opened the clinic's patient portal.
I found the scan from August and held it next to his screen.
The same gray bean. The same white numbers along the edge.
Only mine had a name printed across the top.
SUMNER, LAINEY.
Dalton looked from one to the other.
"She cut the top off," he said.
"She took it off my fridge."
He was quiet for a while.
"Come tomorrow," he said. "To the anniversary. Please. I'll have security at the door."
"To stop her?"
"No." He looked at the phone again. "To let her in."
The Sumner Freight anniversary was on the forty-second floor of the tower.
Floor-to-ceiling windows over the harbor. Four hundred guests.
