Chapter 5: The Straw Hat
"When?" I said.
"The day with the mail. In March." Gloria tapped the screen with one short fingernail. "She had that hat on her head. I thought, who wears a beach hat in March?"
Shane took the phone from me and zoomed in.
The face was nothing. Sunglasses and a shadow.
But the hat was clear.
"Will you say that on Monday?" he asked.
"I said I would."
Dalton didn't come home that night.
On Sunday I heard his car at two in the afternoon, while I was feeding Poppy in the nursery.
I heard him go up the stairs to our bedroom.
I heard the closet door.
Twenty minutes later I heard the car leave again.
He never came to the nursery.
On Monday at nine, Gloria and I rode the elevator to the fortieth floor of Sumner Freight.
Poppy was strapped to my chest in the carrier.
Shane was coming straight from a night shift. He texted that he was ten minutes out.
The glass doors opened onto the executive floor.
Twenty desks. Twenty people who stopped typing.
Marissa was waiting at the reception desk in a cream suit.
"Mrs. Sumner," she said sweetly. "You can't bring a baby up here. It's a workplace."
"Then tell my husband to come out."
"He's expecting you." She looked at Gloria. "Just you."
"She's with me."
Marissa shrugged and walked us to the corner office.
She didn't close the door behind us.
I think she wanted the floor to hear.
Dalton was behind his desk. Ingrid sat on the leather couch by the window.
In the middle of Dalton's desk was a wide straw hat with a black ribbon.
