Chapter 19: Sedative

"No," Magnus said.

He said it to the ceiling, flat on his back with his hand still over mine.

"That's not one of your words anymore," I said. "Not about me."

He sat up so fast the sheets went with him.

"He's been training for a month. He's three inches taller than you as a man, and his wolf's heavier."

"I know how big his wolf is. I ran beside it for three years."

"Brenna..."

"You told me on the shore that a King answers on two legs against a wolf. That's dying in front of people."

He didn't say anything.

"I'm a wolf," I said. "I'm a whole one. And I'm your wife, with your mark on my neck, so the law says I can."

"The law says you can. I'm saying you shouldn't."

"Then say it at the ring. I'll be busy."

He stared at me for a long time in the firelight.

Then he put his hand over his eyes and laughed, a cracked, helpless sound.

"You're going to do it whatever I say."

"Yes."

"Then I want something."

"What?"

"You fight him the way I tell you to fight him. I know how Sund runs. I watched him run from my trackers."
