Chapter 28: The Stepson

Ward looked at him through the open window for a long time.

Jude had lost weight. His sandy hair was too long and flat on one side.

The white sneakers were gray.

"Get in the car, Jude," Ward said.

"I'm not getting in the car. I'm asking you for a job."

"Then step back so I can get out."

Jude stepped back.

Ward looked at me before he opened his door.

"Do you want to be here for this?" he said.

"It's yours," I said. "But I'm not leaving."

He nodded. We both got out.

The alley smelled like hot garbage and the bakery on the corner. It was June and already eighty degrees at half past six.

"What job?" Ward said.

"Anything." Jude's voice cracked on it. "Swing. Understudy. I'll cover the commuter for the swing. I'll do the box office. I'll run a spotlight."

"You don't know how to run a spotlight."

"I'll learn. You learned the rail."

"Nobody will see me," Jude said. "My agent's gone. Nobody returns my calls. That clip of the curtain coming down on me has twenty million views. They play it on late-night shows. They put music under it."
