Chapter 29: The God Mic
The wedding dress was in a garment bag at the back of the closet on the top floor.
I hadn't opened it since March.
On Saturday morning, while Ward was down in the kitchen burning something on purpose to make me laugh, I unzipped it.
It still smelled like the Stanton. Dust and hairspray and the cold of the alley.
Forty silk loops ran down the back. Thirty-nine of them were open.
The last one was still buttoned.
I'd stepped out of the dress that night with it still fastened.
I took my sewing scissors from the drawer and cut it off.
It was a tiny thing, a pearl of white silk the size of a pea.
I put it in the watch pocket of my jeans and zipped the bag back up.
"Cleo?" Ward called up four flights. "Is the smoke detector supposed to be talking?"
"It's telling you to open a window!"
"Which one?"
"Any of them, Ward!"
At five o'clock Joanie was in the booth, three hours before she needed to be.
