Chapter 11: What Russell Found

Russell's POV

I caught Camille alone at the private elevator after the board broke up.

She was fixing her lipstick in the steel door, and she smiled at me in its reflection.

"That was brave," she said. "Standing up in front of everyone."

"Did you make me say it?"

"Say what?"

"The bet. Every time I wrote something, you were the one who told me what to write."

She snapped her compact shut.

"Russell. You wrote every word yourself."

"Because you told me she'd laugh."

"I told you what you wanted to hear." She said it lightly. "You wanted to believe she would never leave you. It made you feel big."

I felt the elevator buttons against my back.

I had stepped back without noticing.

"I trusted you."

"You did," Camille said. "That was your mistake, wasn't it?"

The elevator opened, and she stepped in.

I did not follow.

She held the door with one hand.

"I hold thirty-eight percent of this company now, Russell. For a year, I'm the largest shareholder at the table."

"You're my friend."

"I'm your friend as long as you're useful." Her smile didn't change. "The board can remove a chief executive with a simple majority. I'd be careful what you say to Bianca, if I were you."

The doors closed on her.

I stood in the empty hall and could not get my breath.

My assistant found me ten minutes later and put a tablet in my hand.
