Chapter 20: Comeuppance

The detective climbed the white steps with a folded paper in his hand.

"Camille Dorsey," he said. "You're under arrest for forgery in the second degree, criminal possession of a forged instrument, and tampering with a prescription device."

"This is a party," Camille said.

"It was."

"You can't do this in front of my guests."

"Ma'am, you invited them."

One of the officers took her wrist, the one with the bandage, and she snatched it back.

"Don't touch me. Do you know who I am?"

"Yes," said the detective. "That's why we came."

She spun around, looking for someone in the crowd.

Her eyes went to her sister, who put both hands over her mouth and shook her head.

They went to the six alumni women, who looked at their shoes.

They went to the lenders, and none of them moved.

Then she saw me, standing at the microphone with my grandmother's pin on my collar.

"Bianca," she said.

Her voice dropped to the one I knew, small and wet and hurt.

"Bianca, please. You know me. I was your friend. I held your hair when you were sick in college."

"You did."

"I never meant it to go this far. It was meant to be a joke that got out of hand."

"You wrote a calendar," I said.

"I was lonely. I was so alone, and you had everything, Bianca, the family and the father who loved you, and I had..."

"You had me."

Her mouth shook.

"You had me for ten years," I said. "I would have given you half of anything you asked for. You only had to ask."

"I couldn't ask."

"No. You could only take."

The officer cuffed her hands in front, gently, because there were three hundred phones on her.

Her whole body went slack, and she began to cry in great heaving sobs.
