Chapter 12: The Reading

"There she is," Russell said, and swayed in the doorway. "The faithful wife."

Diana held her phone steady, and its little red light stayed on.

"Keep recording, Diana. I want every second of this."

"You want what?" Calvin said, and he stepped in front of me without hurrying.

"Adultery," Russell said. "A married woman, alone with a man at nine at night. My lawyer will love it."

"You walked into my office after hours without an appointment," Calvin said. "I can have you removed for that, and I would rather not. Leave, both of you."

"Not before we get what we came for."

"Then you will have it. Tomorrow morning at ten," Calvin said, in the same even voice. "In my conference room, with your board chairman present. The reading of your father's papers. Bring Ms. Whitlow if you like, and bring the video. You'll want everyone to see it."

Russell blinked.

"What reading?"

"Ten o'clock," Calvin said, and held the door.

Diana lowered the phone, and her eyes went to my mouth.

I did not wipe it.

They went out, and I heard Russell shouting on the stairs, and then the street door.

Calvin turned to me, and his hands were not quite steady.

"I am so sorry," he said. "I shouldn't have."

"I started it."

"You did." For the first time that night he almost smiled. "I broke it, and I'll answer for that. Go home and sleep, Sylvia."

I did not sleep.

At ten the next morning I sat in a leather chair at the end of Calvin's conference table, with Gwen on my left and my attorney on my right.
