Chapter 6: The Plea
On Tuesday morning Colleen posted a video of her daughter crying.
I saw it at breakfast, because three different mothers from school sent it to me with the same message: Thinking of you.
Colleen sat on a couch in a gray sweater with Lily pressed against her side.
Her eyes were red, and her voice shook in all the right places.
"I'm not asking anyone to take a side," she said to the camera. "I'm only asking people to remember there's a child in the middle. A woman who was kind to us for two years turned on a little girl in her own doorway."
Lily wiped her face with her sleeve.
"Please be gentle with each other," Colleen said. "That's all I want."
It had forty thousand views before eight o'clock.
Maddie came into the kitchen in her school uniform and looked at the screen over my arm.
"Is that Lily?"
"Yes."
"Why's she crying?"
"Her mom made her sit there."
Maddie stared at the screen a moment longer.
Then she sat down and pushed her cereal around with a spoon.
"Mommy," she said. "Am I still Daddy's girl?"
I put the phone face down on the counter.
"You'll always be Daddy's girl. And mine. Nobody gets to take that."
"Then why did he say I'm going to live somewhere else?"
"I don't know yet," I said. "But I'm going to find out, and you're staying right here until I do."
She nodded and ate three bites.
It was all she managed, and I did not push her.
At school the principal was waiting at my classroom door.
