Chapter 9: The Results

The room was so quiet that I heard the ice settle in somebody's glass.

Derek read the screen.

His thumb moved down the page, and stopped.

He read it again from the top.

"Derek," his mother said. "What does it say?"

He did not answer her.

His lips moved over the words, and the color left his face a little at a time.

"Read it, son. Out loud. That's what you said you'd do."

He lifted his head and looked at the room without seeing it.

"Probability of paternity," he said. His voice cracked, and he started over. "Probability of paternity, zero percent. The alleged father is excluded as the biological father of the child tested."

Nobody moved.

At the head table, Derek's mother set her fork down very gently on the plate.

"That's wrong," Derek said. "That's a mistake. The lab made a mistake."

"Derek," Colleen said. Her voice was thin. "Sit down."

"You told me. You looked me in the eye and told me."

"I was sure."

"You were sure?"

"We'll do it again," she said. "We'll do another test. They contaminate samples all the time, it's a known thing."

Across the room, a cousin let out a low, disbelieving sound.

I had not moved.

I sat with my hands flat on my knees, and I felt the baby roll under them.

A small voice came from the head table.
