Chapter 18: Your Rule
Monica's POV
Joanne drove me to Bluewater and didn't ask why.
She dropped me at the curb, kept the engine running and said, "If you're not out in an hour, I'm calling the police or a priest."
"Which one?"
"Whichever one I need."
The lobby lights were off, and the office light was on.
Keith sat at his desk with his phone in his hand and his jaw set.
He looked up when I came in, and he stood so fast the chair rolled back.
"You shouldn't be here."
"Everyone on Ridgeline has already decided I should be."
"Monica."
"My lawyer says it's nothing. A man gave a woman a ride. The judge won't care." I put my bag down. "I still want to know who took it, and you already told me."
"His mother."
"His mother paid a stranger to sit in a car and wait for me to be human."
"She did."
"For seven years I was careful," I said. "I was careful and tired and kind, and look where it got me."
He stayed on his side of the desk.
"What do you want me to do?" he asked.
I thought about that.
I thought about his thumb on my pulse, and a gray car.
I thought about a rule I had made in a parking lot because I was frightened.
"I want you to stop being so careful," I said.
"You made the rule."
"I know."
"You said nothing that looks like more."
"It already looks like more. They've printed it."
He came around the desk slowly, and I walked around it from the other side, and then there was nothing between us.
