Chapter 16: Not Your Sister

Summer stood in the aisle with a hundred eyes on her and one hand pressed to the top of her belly.

"You want the truth," she said. "Here it is."

Her lawyer said, "Ms. Eberle, stop talking."

"You're fired," she told her lawyer.

The woman in the gray suit picked up her folder and walked out of the lounge.

Nobody watched her go.

"Tom and I were fine," Summer said. "We were broke and fine. Then I saw the test, and I thought, this baby deserves more than a rented kitchen and a man who talks about Indiana."

Tom made a low sound.

"So I called Grady. I've called him every time something went wrong since we were seven. He came with a car and a check."

"I never asked you for anything," Grady said.

"You asked me for one thing."

She turned to face him.

"You said, Move into 1806. Claire is in Dayton for weeks. I'll have her card cut off first, so there's no scene when she comes home."

The room made one sound together.

"You said, Tell her Tom threw you out. She'll pity you. She won't ask."

"Summer."

"You said you'd explain it to her after the papers were done. You said she'd get over it because she always does."

I felt Keaton's shoulder against mine.

I didn't look away from her.

"Did he say what he'd do with me?" I asked.

Summer met my eyes.

"He said you'd sign. He said you were soft. He said you'd cry in the lobby and sign."

"I did cry in the lobby."

"I know. I watched from the stairs."

Her voice broke on the last word. It was the first honest thing she had done in my presence.
