Chapter 14: Tea at the Club

I wore a fitted blue knit dress to the Lakeshore Club, and I didn't suck anything in.

Bernice's eyes went to my stomach before they went to my face.

"Hannah, dear. How well you look."

"Thank you."

"That color is brave."

"I've been told I'm brave," I said, and sat down.

The tearoom had a glass ceiling and white tablecloths, and about a dozen women in cashmere sat at the other tables.

I knew two of them by sight from Ethan's mother's foundation dinners.

One of them had been at my wedding.

Bernice had chosen the table in the middle of the room.

She poured my tea herself, with a silver pot, and pushed a plate of tiny cakes across the cloth.

"Eat. You're eating for two."

My phone was in my bag on my lap, with the red dot running.

"You know," I said.

"Of course I know." She smiled at the room, and a woman at the next table smiled back. "A mother can tell. I could tell on my own doorstep."

"And you didn't say anything."

"I was waiting for you to come to me. You were so proud. I didn't want to take that from you."

I almost laughed.

She stirred her tea slowly, and she lowered her voice only a little.

"I'd like to be practical. This will be a hard winter for you. A woman on her own, with a clinic salary, and a baby due in the spring. It's frightening."

"I own my home."

"A condo," Bernice said, with great gentleness, "isn't a nursery."

She reached into her handbag and laid an ivory folder on the cloth between us.

"I've had my lawyer draw something up. You'll have a house in Winnetka, in your name, free and clear. A trust of two million for the child's schooling, and a monthly allowance for you."
