Chapter 4: Bernice's Terms
Bernice Sorley came off the elevator with her coat over her arm.
She was sixty-one, with a silver bob and pearls, and she had never once been late to anything that mattered to her.
She walked right past Macy without looking at her.
"Hannah, dear. You look tired."
"Hello, Bernice."
"May we come in?"
"No."
Ethan made a small sound behind her.
Bernice smiled.
It was the smile she wore at the foundation dinners, perfectly polite, and it stopped well short of her eyes.
"Then we'll do this in the hall," she said. "I'd rather not, with the neighbors, but you've left us no choice."
"There's nothing to do."
"There is, though." She folded her coat over her other arm. "Quinn is very upset."
I laughed.
I couldn't help it.
It came out short and dry, and Macy turned a laugh into a cough behind me.
"I'm sorry," I said. "Quinn is upset?"
"She's been through a great deal. Her engagement has ended in the cruelest way, and she came to my son because she trusted him. You humiliated her in front of a restaurant full of strangers."
"A man had just flown across the country to find her."
"A man who frightened her."
"A man she'd said yes to."
"Hannah." Her voice went down and soft. "I'm going to be very direct. I'd like you to call Quinn tonight and apologize. Then I'd like you to come to Sunday dinner at my house, next week, with Ethan, and we'll put all of this behind us."
