Chapter 20: Mile 140

Nobody in the hall moved.

"A white pickup clipped his truck from behind," Delaney said. "The driver never stopped. The state wrote it up as ice."

Marjorie reached for the microphone, and Delaney stepped sideways out of her reach.

"Three months later, I learned who was driving."

"Turn that off," Marjorie said to the room, brightly. "She's had an episode."

"The driver is sitting on this stage."

Two hundred heads turned toward Dennis.

He stood up, and the plaque slid off his knee and cracked on the floor.

"Dennis," Marjorie said. "Sit down."

"I want to say something."

"You are unwell. Sit."

His mouth opened and shut.

For twelve years he had done what she said, and I watched the habit pull at his whole body.

At the back of the hall, Garrett pressed a key.

The screen above the stage lit up, black and white, a view from high under an awning.

A woman in a camel coat lifted a brown bag out of a trunk.

Gasps ran through the chairs.

"That's Piper's bag," a woman said, loudly, in the fifth row. "That's her pocketbook."

Marjorie turned and saw her own face on a screen forty feet wide.

Then the speakers crackled, and her voice came out of them, perfectly clear.

"Sign the visitation agreement, Piper, or Delaney's mother loses her bed at the care home by Christmas."

Another clip followed it.

"A witness to what? A drunk's mumbling, twelve years ago?"

The hall was so quiet I heard the heater tick.

"That's not what it sounds like," Marjorie said.

Nobody answered her.

"Dennis," she said. "Dennis, say something."

He looked down at her from the stage.

"I was driving," he said.

He said it into the dead air, with no microphone, and it carried to the back wall.

"It was the Saturday before Christmas. I'd had five bourbons at the dealership party. I saw taillights, and then I didn't."

"Dennis!"

"I went home. I told you. And you fixed it."

Marjorie's face came apart.
