Chapter 16: Little Italy Days
Liberty Avenue was closed to cars for Little Italy Days, and the whole of Bloomfield was out on the asphalt in the heat.
There were bocce courts laid down on tarps and a church band on a flatbed truck.
Strings of red, white and green lights hung over every storefront.
The street smelled of fried dough, peppers and hot grease.
Jackie had brought her kids and half of Carrick.
She left me at the sausage stand with a ten-dollar bill and the order to get four.
"That's what I want to see," she said. "My sister, standing next to a grill."
"Where are you going?"
"To win my son a stuffed animal," she said. "Be good."
I got in line.
It was a booth with a striped awning.
Behind the grill, in a white apron and a bandana, with sweat running down his temples, was Luca.
He saw me from ten feet away.
He stopped with the tongs in the air, and then he dropped the tongs.
Three cousins turned and looked at him, and then at me, and one of them said something in Italian that made the others laugh.
"Dee," Luca said.
"Hi, Luca."
He came around the side of the counter, wiping his hands on the apron.
