Chapter 18: A Mark Nobody Gave
"Kell," I said. "Wake up."
He opened one eye.
"I'm awake. I've been awake. I was enjoying it."
"Look at your throat."
"I can't look at my own throat, Willa. I'm not an owl."
I took his hand and put his fingers on it.
He went still.
Then he sat up so fast he nearly put us both in the pool, and grabbed my wrist, and turned it to the light.
He looked at the coil in the middle of the new mark for a long time.
"Nobody said the words," he said.
"No."
"No chief. No fire."
"No."
He laughed, low and shaky, and pressed his mouth to the inside of my wrist, right on it.
"Then it's the only one in the Wildlands nobody gave you," he said.
The storm broke at noon.
We came down the mountain in the long blue light, the fox wrapped in my spare shirt inside my pack.
Kell walked ahead of me the whole way.
The warmth stayed in him until the river trail.
Then the cold crept back into his hands, but slower than before.
We walked through the night, because he could.
