Chapter 23: The Tally Stick
I stood in the snow with my bare feet burning and looked at the tracks until I could see them with my eyes shut.
Then I went inside and woke the lodge.
"Somebody took the map," I said.
Tobiah sat up so fast he hit his head on the bunk above.
Kell came to the window and looked out at the line of prints.
"Not Brannon," he said. "Brannon can't hold his wolf long. This one ran the yard and cleared the fence without touching it."
"One of his team, then."
"One of his team. Running Brannon's errand."
I took the lid off the flour barrel, turned it over, and sat down at the table with a stick of charcoal.
I drew the gash in the mountain first.
Then the long white bowl of the valley.
The tarn, the narrows, the north ledge, the steam caves at the mouth.
Kell sat across from me and said a number when I needed one.
"Forty steps from the tarn to the first cord."
"Forty-two."
"You walk short when you're cold."
"I walk short when you're watching me."
