Chapter 32: A Pack of Her Own
The ice went out of the river in the first week of spring, all in one night, with a sound.
Kell was lying on his back in the lodge yard, in the sun, with his shirt off.
The splint was gone, and the leg had healed straight.
The heartstone sat in its pouch at his throat, worn down by one sliver every morning.
The scales along his collarbones shone like wet slate.
"People can see you," I said, standing over him.
"Let them."
"The baker's wife has walked past three times."
"She's welcome to a fourth." He didn't open his eyes. "Do you know what this is?"
"Lying in the mud."
"It's warm." He held up one hand into the light and turned it over. "I'm warm, and it's not even summer. Twenty-eight winters, Willa. I'd forgotten what the sun was for."
I lay down beside him in the thawing yard.
He found my hand without looking and held it, and his was warmer than mine.
"Don't be late," he said. "The Hall's waiting on you."
"I'm never late."
"You were late the night you walked out of the Ridge."
