Chapter 7: Don't Yell at My Mom

Mom did not let me walk back.

She took me up to the apartment first and made me lie on the bed behind the curtain for an hour with my feet on a pillow.

Then we took the number six bus up Main Street, with my head on her shoulder and the canvas bag on her knees.

She said, "I'm going to walk you to the door," and I said Dad would be mad.

"I know," Mom said. "I'm going anyway."

It was past three when we turned onto Linden Drive.

Dad's truck was in the driveway.

Grandma Maureen was on the porch in a lawn chair with a glass of iced tea, and she stood up when she saw us.

The neighbors were out, because it was Sunday afternoon.

A man was edging his lawn.

Two women stood by a mailbox with a stroller and a dog.

Dad came off the porch fast, with his phone in his hand.

"Where was she?"

"On the Main Street bridge," Mom said. "Sitting on the sidewalk with a blue mouth."

"She ran away, Signe. I have been calling every hospital in the county."

"You've been at the golf course, Craig. Alana told me when I called the house." Mom kept her voice low and even. "Maddy walked two miles by herself because you said no to her mother. She nearly passed out."

"Don't you twist this."

"Look at her fingernails."

"I'm not going to look at her fingernails. You did this." Dad's voice was loud now, and the man with the edger had turned his machine off. "You filled her head with sickness, and now you're parading her through the neighborhood. You're stalking her. You're at her school, you're at my house..."
