Chapter 15: Eleven Million
Holbrook Draper left the house with his shirt buttoned wrong and his wife's taste still in his mouth.
The driver had the car idling at the gate.
"He's inside the showroom, sir," the driver said. "Twenty minutes. The side door's unlocked."
"Stay here."
"Sir, if there's trouble..."
"Then you'll hear it."
The Moody Motors lot was a field of dark cars under a chain of dead bulbs.
Forty of Dwight's smiling billboard faces hung in a poster stack by the service door, ready for the next campaign.
Holbrook stepped in over them.
The showroom lights were off.
One office at the back was lit, with its blinds half open.
He crossed the floor in his dress shoes, keeping to the carpet, and stopped behind a white pickup with a bow on the hood.
He took out his phone and set it to record.
He had spent thirty-four years being told that a Draper does not skulk.
He had never wanted so badly to be one.
"Nine million," Dwight was saying, in the office. "That's what you promised."
"I promised you the bakery, the ovens and the girl's humiliation," Lyle said. "I never promised nine million."
"You said sky's the limit."
"I said that before the board voted for an audit."
Lyle was sitting on the edge of Dwight's desk, in his good navy coat, swinging one expensive shoe.
Holbrook could see him through the gap in the blinds.
"What's the audit got to do with me?" Dwight said.
"It has everything to do with you. The auditors will open the vendor files, and they'll find Lakeshore Consulting, and they'll find that Lakeshore has been invoicing forty hotels for work nobody did."
