Chapter 23: The Real Wedding
They were married on a Saturday morning in November, in the front room of Ridley's, with the ovens still warm.
Bryony had chosen the place herself.
The tables were pushed to the walls, and sixty folding chairs stood in rows on the tile, and the whole shop smelled of cinnamon and fresh bread.
She stood at the kitchen door in a plain ivory dress with her hair down and flour on her hem.
Her mother stood beside her in a gray suit.
"I'm supposed to say something," Rosalind said. "I wrote it down."
"Say it."
"I don't have it. I lost the paper." Rosalind's hands shook. "I'm so proud of you that I can't see straight."
"That's fine, Mom."
"That's the plain version."
"It's the best one."
The organist was a boy from the corner music school, playing a keyboard, and he hit the first notes.
Rosalind took her daughter's arm.
She walked her down the aisle between the folding chairs, past the regulars and the neighbors and the old man in the ragged coat, who had a suit on today and had polished his shoes.
Bryony saw the investigator in the third row with his hat in his lap, and the lawyer, and the auditor in her charcoal suit.
She saw the housekeeper crying openly.
And in the front row, in a wheelchair with a blanket over her knees and a silver-headed cane across it, she saw Cordelia Draper.
Holbrook waited at the end of the aisle in a dark suit.
His hands were clasped in front of him, and he was looking only at her.
She had thought she was past being undone by that look.
She was not.
Rosalind kissed her cheek, and stepped back, and Bryony took Holbrook's hands.
