Chapter 22: The Claim

We did not make it to the third floor with our clothes on.

He kicked the door of the room under the roof shut behind us, and I had his coat off his shoulders before the latch caught.

The lamp was off.

Moonlight came through the north window and lay across the wall where my pencil maps were pinned.

"Thirty days," I said, against his mouth. "No scent talk. No touching."

"Roxana."

"The terms still run, Alpha. I read them again on the drive. There are days left on them, and I intend to break every rule in them."

He laughed, a short rough sound, and kissed me harder.

"Talk about the scent," I said.

"It's you."

"Say more."

"It's smoke and rain and cold pencil shavings." His mouth was on my ear. "It's been you since the night you walked out of the Naming in a torn dress. I couldn't stand next to you without wanting to put you on the nearest table."

"You had the nearest table."

"I had a rule."

"Break it."

I shoved him down onto the bed.

He went, and sat there looking up at me with his chest rising fast and his eyes full gold.

I pulled my shirt over my head, and he saw the bandage on my arm and the cord of the Alpha lying between my breasts.

His hands came up and stopped.

"Your arm."

"It's fine."

"I'll go slow."

"If you go slow, I'll bite you," I said.

"Is this the part," Jonas said roughly, and the corner of his mouth lifted, "where you claim me, Alpha?"

They were my own words from the night of the silver knife, handed back to me with the sting taken out.

"Yes," I said. "Like this."

I unbuckled his belt and pulled his jeans off him, and he was already hard.
