"Not for the recusal, then," I said. "For what?"
Elliot set the box on the floor between us.
"Tomorrow at nine I'm going to tell the agency," he said. "All of it. The part I left out too."
The elevator chimed behind me and nobody got off.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because Courtney just walked out of here with the rest of it."
"By lunch the story in this pit will be a girl who slept her way onto a pitch."
"I'd rather they heard the true version from the man who did it."
"And what's the true version?"
"That I knew," he said. "Ninety people take their salary from my signature, and they should know what it's worth."
I looked down the corridor at the pit.
Someone laughed over a monitor, and someone else shushed them.
"You're going to stand on that stage and make yourself the villain," I said, "so I can be the victim."
"No."
